SSP rural economic development catalyst Brooke Leslie is hosting a Monthly Rural Economic Development (RED) Coalition Hangout monthly every third Thursday from 9-10:30 am AKST. This hangout is a virtual opportunity to cross geographic locations and organizations, share ideas and collaborate on rural economic development projects and initiatives in Southeast Alaska. SSP supported monthly workforce development and career and technical education calls provide a facilitated opportunity for community-based and regional partners to share updates and developments in the areas of workforce development and career and technical education, sit in on presentations by stakeholders and actors in these spaces, and engage in routine strategic planning and program development. These sessions are centered around increasing collaboration, reducing duplication of projects and inspiring regenerative economic growth initiatives. The Alaska Youth Stewards program is seeking crew leaders for the 2024 season! Crew leaders are responsible for training and supporting youth crews throughout the field season and are hired by the host organization for a minimum of 4-6 months. Crew members, aged 14-18, are paid and participate in the season starting in June – mid August. Hiring time frame is dependent on crew but can be as early as March and go until late May. This fall-to-spring residential fellowship program nurtures the next generation of Alaska-based leaders by pairing talented young people with strong communities and professional mentors, including Spruce Root. Want help paying for energy costs at community facilities? Most rural Alaska communities receive an allocation of Power Cost Equalization (PCE) funding to help pay for energy costs at community facilities.  Based on data released by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA), over 3.7 million kilowatt hours of Community Facility PCE allocated to AP&T’s service areas were not utilized in 2022 – benefits valued by the AEA at over $500,000. Please encourage your community’s public facilities to sign up for this affordable energy benefit! Click here for the form.
